Lets Talk 70’s
Over the past year, it is safe to say that many of our lives, tastes, and styles have changed significantly. Whether that means bleaching your hair, wearing sheer blouses with a velvet pant, or vibrant, chunky rings that scream the latest. However, Fashion is all about bringing the old, into the new, and with inspiration from Cher, Blondie, and Diana Ross, girls and boys across the globe are enhancing and strengthening their looks day by day. Creative Designer and Director for Gucci , Alessandro Michele, is a prominent and remarkable figure in today’s society for those who are eager to wear the most exquisite and unique Fashion. In the 70s, it was all about bell-bottom jeans, polyester leisure suits, wide lapels, and halter tops. Now its 2021, and many of us are incorporating these trends into our everyday styles yet, with our own personal touch that portrays what we love and what we want to present to the public’s eye.

“The way you dress is an expression of your
personality” – Alessandro Michele
Not only did Cher, Blondie, and Diana Ross break the boundaries in Fashion during the 70s, but, they continue to inspire the bodies and minds of thousands of girls and boys today. For Alessandro Michele, collaborating with bold and distinctive models and brands, is very easy for him because expressing his vision through artistry and design is what Gucci represents through all their articles of clothing. From women’s to menswear, Gucci articulates the 70s-inspired flare that radiates in daring and eye-catching colors and textures. Scrolling through the pictures and pieces that Alessandro Michele and his team have put together over the past year for the Spring and Fall 2021 line, I have become more and more intrigued and fascinated with the many 70s-inspired designs and sketches that Gucci proclaims to the world. In my opinion, reading and writing about Gucci, has made me want to formulate eccentric looks and to take risks while I too break the boundaries in Fashion.

One Last Look Back
Throughout this past year, there have been many ups and unfortunately, many more downs. However, the world of Fashion and Beauty has acted as a shining platform to allow us, especially me, the opportunity to reconstruct ourselves and create individuality through distinct articles of clothing. From oversized leather jackets and high-waisted loafers, to baby tees and low-rise jeans, the trends that were born this year will continue through 2021. Even though our lives have been put on pause, and the “normal” is now seen through computer or phone screens, high-end brands such as, Chanel, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and many more, have illustrated alluring and exclusive pieces that have proudly walked down the runways of Paris and Italy. Fashion can be accepted and enjoyed from more than 6 feet apart. While Fashion is an environment absorbed with creative minds and inventive creations, you and I play a vital role for the existence of Fashion and Beauty. Fashion icons all around the world have paved the way for our eyes to be attracted to pieces and products that speak to our heart, and through Quarantine, I believe that thousands of girls and boys, like myself, have changed their Fashion taste, style, and preference.

“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.” —Gianni Versace“
Even though 2020 has been the longest, yet fastest year, our TV’s, computers, and phones have influenced the way Fashion and Beauty is seen through the eyes of the young. Celebrities’ such as, Adut Akech, Devon Lee Carlson, and Emma Chamberlain have made a significant impact on teens and adults during Quarantine. Personally for me, in the beginning of 2020, my style needed a major rebranding. It started with skinny jeans, plain shirts, and day-to-day shoes. Yet, as time passed by, I saw myself becoming more and more intrigued with pastel tones, printed pants, chunky rings, and surprisingly, oversized blazers. Fashion is a never ending cycle of artistry, ingenuity, and thread. I, and many teens out there, search for purpose everyday in our lives, whether that means playing a specific sport, or participating in theater, or even writing poems about love and hope. And the craziest thing that I have learned about myself this year, is that I don’t need to hide from my problems or fears, or escape from what I love, which is writing and learning about Fashion.

2020 has been an exhausting, unstable, and conflicting year, yet, a year that has allowed me to dig deep inwardly and grow with a sense of self importance and purpose. As we continue on with these difficult yet, reassuring times, remember to be curious, so curious that it will make you want to mix and match patterns and textures. Remember to be accepting, so accepting that it makes those around you, feel beautiful and powerful. And lastly, remember to be brave, so brave that you even surprise yourself for the choices that you have made, that it leaves you wanting more. So, cheers to 2020, you will forever be in our past.

Euphoria- Beyond the Makeup
Doniella Davy is the mastermind behind the unique and intelligent makeup looks in the HBO series, Euphoria. Makeup is a piece of artwork, that helps the public understand someone’s image in an authentic and an exceptional way. Every single character in the series has an aesthetic look to them, whether that means having rhinestones layered along the cheekbone or having pigmented eyeliner along the eyelids. Doniella has inspired people across the world to express themselves however they please by using makeup in a clashing illustration.

As you watch the series, you will realize that throughout each episode, Kat, Cassie, Rue, and other characters wear and portray themselves continuously in different ways. There is never a moment where you see a character articulating a look the same way twice. Seeing the process and watching videos of the makeup artists tackling ways to emphasize the advanced and rare makeup looks is truly amazing to witness. One thing that I love about Doniella’s taste is, how each characters style is separate from the rest. Personally for me, I am in love with Maddy Perez’s style and makeup looks (Maddy is played by actress Alexa Demie). They’re bold, fierce, striking, and daring, everything that a makeup artist should present to the public and media’s eye.
Doniella Davy once said in an interview with Allure Magazine that, “it was the opposite approach from what typical makeup departments use for television. Usually, so-and-so has their everyday look, and that’s just their look. This was completely different because Sam (creator of Euphoria) wanted the makeup to be its own full expression of what was going on with the characters. If they’re experiencing different emotions and circumstances in all these scenes, then the makeup had to be different.”

Makeup is a “whole freedom of self-expression”, says Sam Levinson. Over the years, makeup on television has not been depicted in a creative way like, the series Euphoria does. Witnessing the artistic wonders of the makeup looks Doniella Davy and Sam Levinson generated in the show, motivated me and thousands of young teens, who are experimenting with makeup, to go beyond the regular standard of how makeup should look. From now on, before I leave my home, I will no longer just wear mascara, I will apply glitter to my eyelids and rhinestones to my cheeks.
